Proposals to tranform human beings technologically into a new kind of living and conscious set of beings are now known technically as “transhumanism,” a project of increasing interest today. This article explores the possible contribution Christian theology might make to the building of a worldview appropriate to any future application of the emerging new technologies. Since Christians make up a large percentage of the world’s population, it is important to ask whether their visions of the world’s future can instruct the purveyors of transhumanist ideals in a significant way. I argue here that Christian faith and its rich traditions, especially the biblical motifs of divine promise and liberation, can provide fertile constraints within which any future technological transformation of human persons and our planetary habitat may be carried out.
