本書基於前人的研究，針對宋代詩論和道學的互動提出新的論述。正如魏希德（Hilde De Weerdt）的南宋思想史研究（見 Hilde De Weerdt, Competition over Content: Negotiating Standards for the Civil Service Examinations in Imperial China (1127-1279)）， Fuller 也運用了法國社會學家 Pierre Bourdieu所發展的「社會領域」理論來分析宋詩發展過程中出現的不同的社會位置。然而其研究路徑不限於此，而更近似於包璧德（Peter Bol）結合思想史，社會史與文學史等元素的方法。
