英文摘要

In the past, there have been various discussions about and explanations of the meaning of “faith” (pi,stij) in the phrase “from faith to faith” (evk pi,stewj eivj pi,stin). Generally, the explanations can be divided into four groups: (1) human–human, (2) Christ–human, (3) Christ–human’s belief action, (4) God–human. The purpose of this article is, by using the context of Romans as well as the relationship of verses and syntagmatic relations, to analyze the two “faith” concepts in “from faith to faith” in Rom 1:17a. Following the analysis, this article comes to the conclusion that the meaning of both “faith” concepts can be expressed as “God’s faithfulness”, or a God–God explanation. According to this argument, the phrase “from faith to faith” can be explained as “God’s faithfulness is from the beginning to the end.” And thus Rom 1:17a can be translated as “God’s faithfulness is from the beginning to the end which reveals the saving action of God through the Gospel.” Paul uses this language to answer the question about God’s faithfulness among the believing Jews and Gentiles.
