《臺灣日日新報》一直是進行日治時期相關研究時，不可或缺的參考資料之一，因其發行的時間與日人治理臺灣的時間相當。再者，其所涵蓋內容廣泛，從政治、經濟、社會、史地，到包含文學、美術、音樂、戲劇、舞蹈、電影等之藝文領域，且報導對象包括當時居住在臺灣的漢人、原住民、日本人，以及臺灣以外的日本人、中國人和世界各地的人們。刊載的體裁，涵蓋了活動和事件的紀實報導、專題專文、小說、詩詞文學、遊記、廣告和讀者投書等。如能藉由這份紀實且連續的報紙，或許可以對當時的活動現象瞭解更為清楚透徹。本文以刊載於《臺灣日日新報》的報導為主，分別從節慶和慶典活動、商業劇場的興建、新劇種的興起和傳入三方面，旁及關於祭孔、西皮福路之爭和禁歌舞音曲等部分，整理歸納相關報導，企欲理出明治時期（1895〜1912年）漢人音樂、戲曲活動的概況與特點，能對日後相關研究有些許助益。

Published from 1898 to 1944, Taiwan Daily News was the most long-lasting and widely circulated newspaper in Taiwan under Japan's colonial rule. In recent years, it has become one of the most indispensable sources to learn about the condition of the time. This paper analyzes the newspaper's reports on the Han Chinese musical and theatrical activities during the Meiji period (1895-1912). Specifically it focuses on three aspects, namely the festivals and ceremonies, the launching of modern theaters, and the rising and importation of new theatrical genres. It also touches on Confucian rituals, the struggle between xipi and fulu (the two major styles of beiguan), and the censorship of music and dance at the death of Emperor Meiji in 1912.
