Taiwan’s post-war modernization and industrial development, with its accelerated compression of time and space have led to ever more diversification and an increasingly hectic way of life. As a result, metropolitan dwellers eagerly seek places for peace and relaxation in rural areas. The Simangus' settlement located in Hsinchu County is regarded by the people of the north as a dreamland for its remote, unadulterated environment and intriguing culture. Contemporary spatial theories suggest that in a capitalistic society, the pressure of expansion invariably promotes continuous creation of space for production, circulation, exchange and consumption, which in turn is then destroyed, setting off the search for another exploitable space. Tourism development in many aboriginal settlements is currently leading to such crises. Will Simangus, currently undergoing development, be heading down the same road? This study, based on relevant space production theories, believes that space is not produced by a society alone, but rather by a series of social relationships. In the context of this debate between space and society, power also comes into play. Within this theoretical position, the writer demonstrates how functional variables including the state, tourists and local residents constrain the behavior of this tribe in interpreting the existing and the potential challenges of tourism development and proposes ways in which they may confront the capitalist logic that threatens to overwhelm them.
