It has been a common proposition that all the news reports must contain “facts, the facts, all facts, nothing but the facts.” But since these stories are written in a language that is familiar by both the readers and news professionals, they are inevitably “manufactured” and therefore not objectified nor context-freed but rather involved with personal feelings, perceptions, along with aesthetic values. The purpose, and importance, of this paper is therefore located in its effort to examine the value of news from the perspective of aesthetics, an attempt rarely tried by previous researchers either in journalism or in mass communication. We begin our paper by briefly tracing the history of aesthetics, and discussed a central issue: Whether or not a news story can be written as beautiful as a poem. We surely admit and accept the past mythology that the profession of journalism still maintains a major function to reflect the social reality in its daily task, but we wonder whether this has to be sacrificed by the rejection of aesthetic ideas. We then presented a number of argumentations, in which the key aesthetic concepts were drawn with a purpose to check with their fitness to the journalistic discussion, including “passion,” “clearness,” and “linkage to the context.” We hope our discussion would show that aesthetic values are not only necessary but also important to the profession of journalism, and further exploration of other similar aesthetic concepts would help future development of our discipline.
