The high-tech industry is lured into the plant factory business as the world is faced with the issues of global food crisis, depletion of water resources and food safety. A plant factory uses artificial light and nutrient solution for crop cultivation. Taiwan has been four years into the active development of the industry. More than two years ago an article on the internet mentioned that Chen, Shih-hsiung, President of Mingdao University was "against the promotion of plant factories in Taiwan." President Chen held that it usually took tens of billions of dollars to build a high-tech plant while a plant factory costed only tens of millions of dollars, an ignorable small investment in the eyes of the business tycoons, but wrongful investment in plant factories in large numbers, could be a big trouble in the future.
