本文探究的動機，起於人對於「自我」常會產生許多疑問，當疑問產生時，探索 自己是必須透過「自我概念」的認識。而「自我概念」的產生是在許多生活的過程， 慢慢地自我了解。於是作者以此概念作為發展此文的研究目的，即是當這些思考發生 在女性藝術家身上時，創作是否成為女性藝術家探索「自我」的方式。内文主要聚焦 在1895-2013年的台灣女性藝術家創作為例，藉由台灣女性藝術家的創作，詮釋其創 作與「自我」的關聯性。作者將「自我」相關理論以及台灣女性藝術家的相關論述脈 絡，加以整理及做跨理論之論述分析。最後，作者發現，台灣女性藝術家有關「自我」 的觀看創作，是來自「自我概念」的認識，而「自我概念」的認識是與社會當時脈絡 氛圍有很大的關連性。因此，「自我」是可能做為藝術家接收自身所處的位置與角色 的載體。
