This study assessed and traced the performance of undergraduate students from the Department of Civil Engineering, National Taiwan University in applying Capstone Course to the design and construction of a new footbridge using domestic plantation timber. The bridge was to be constructed across a mountain torrent in the Xitou Nature Education Area of the NTU Experimental Forest. The design process started with case studies of existing bridges, followed by development of structural system proposals and construction of 1:50 foam-board scale models. After field investigation, students worked in teams to propose four possible locations. Two bridge designs selected by the visitors in Xitou area based on questionnaires were then developed with formulated assembling details and calculated structural strength. Two 1:25 scale models were fabricated using curved glulam members and soldered copper joints. Load tests were then conducted. Comments from professional structural designers and the public were solicited, and the options preferred by future users were identified. Detailed structural calculations for the preferred option were performed in 2D and 3D with the aim of producing a set of construction drawings for possible implementation. Throughout the process, students were highly motivated in addressing the challenges. Despite their lack of experience in domestic thinned wood utilization, their performance was satisfactory. This course served its purpose of using thinned wood, fostering collaborative learning among students and promoting their communication skill with instructors, professionals, users and decision-makers.
