(World Federation of Occupational Therapists, WFOT)

By facilitating engagement in daily life, occupational therapy improves the health and wellbeing of many individuals regardless of their location or whether they have a disability. The purpose of this study is to investigate the experiences of occupational therapists who were a part of the medical team participating in the Sunflower Movement. In doing so, this paper endeavors to understand the challenges and opportunities the therapists encountered when providing services to unconventional clients in non-medical contexts. Purposeful sampling was used, and six occupational therapists were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed using the grounded theory approach. The results showed that the occupational therapists not only experienced challenges but also reflected on this service providing process. Five main themes were identified: motivation of participation, role of the medical team, identification of the role of different professionals, its challenges and uncertainties, and reflection on the identity of occupational therapist. The results highlighted inconsistencies between occupational therapy theories and clinical practice and between formal education and fieldwork training. Thinking outside the medical model in order to provide occupation-focused services would be a pertinent way to solve this problem. Furthermore, the World Federation of Occupational Therapists posits that “occupational participation is a human right” and “the relation between occupation and health” is the core concept of occupational therapys education. The largest contribution of occupational therapy to humanity would be to delve into the society and facilitate an environment that respects the right and opportunities of people’s occupational participation.
