My play, The Lizards of “ARS,” the Latin word for art, functions as a parody performance improvisation for people to explore, reinterpret, and even bend the various meanings of art that range from beauty, preference, significant form, and expression to kitsch, game, and prosthetic visuality. These aesthetic ideas appear, transform, and slip away in the play, as participants search and struggle to understand the complex ideas associated with the changing art worlds. This is an invitation to look for subtle meanings in the Lizards of ARS and invent new ones with your students in a “playful” way. The play also fulfills STEAM(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics)-multiple creative literacies or means of communication in education: mask making, reading, writing, public speaking, dramatic interpreting, and photographing.
