Founded in 1991, The National Philosophical Counseling Association (NPCA) is the premier philosophical practice association in the United States. This paper examines the new boundary/practice rules recently implemented by the NPCA. Because philosophical practice in the United States is not regulated by state law, the NPCA is tasked with regulating practice, among its members, so that it does not impinge upon state laws governing other professional areas, notably mental health practice such as psychology, social work, and mental health counseling. Distinguishing between philosophical counselors and philosophical consultants, this paper describes the practice areas of each. Specifically, it describes the credentials (education and training) now required for practice within each category, lists the types of cases that are appropriately undertaken by each, and provides a comprehensive set of standards of referral that govern philosophical practice. The NPCA was founded on the idea that philosophical practice and mental health practice are complementary areas of practice. By clarifying the boundaries and relationships between these complementary areas of praxis, it is intended that the new NPCA rules will bring greater respectability to philosophical practice as a profession; enhance cooperation between philosophical and mental health practitioners; and serve as an international model for philosophical practitioners throughout the world to emulate.
