This study aims to understand mainland Chinese students' feelings about and political attitude toward Taiwan after their extensive intercultural social contact, using focus groups conducted two months after Sunflower Movement. Results show that most students don't rate highly of the economic development, social freedom, and news quality in Taiwan. The Movement has disturbed their understanding of the political relationship between mainland China and Taiwan; some have showed in their utterances a more favorable attitude toward Taiwan and even the imagination of democracy in China, whereas others have set bottom-lines of identifying with Taiwan to avoid losing their identity. We conclude that the Movement is a tester for the effects of social contact: those staying in Taiwan for a long time and undertaking more true acquaintance have confirmed their positive expectation of Taiwan's institutions after witnessing the society's tolerance for diverse voices during the Movement, whereas those staying for a short time and having more casual acquaintance are more likely to notice mainly the “anti-China” ideas in the Movement.
