Many previous studies have shown that listening to music has benefits in many fields. However, studies regarding music and design are rarely seen. This study explores the effects of music tempo on designer’s idea generation. Undergraduate students with major of industrial design were invited to develop sketches for novel seasoning containers in the conditions of fast-tempo music, slow-tempo music and without music. The subjects have 5 minutes to warm up then perform design task lasting for 40 minutes and they were encouraged to generate as many ideas as possible. After the experiment, the subjects were asked to fill in in a questionnaire for the emotional responses and design behavior they had after listening to the music of different tempo. Three design experts were invited to the evaluation of the sketches in terms of Guilford’s fluency, originality, flexibility, elaboration, as well as feasibility and suitability criteria proposed in the study. The experimental results showed that, music tempo will interact with people's emotion feelings and behavioral reaction, which further affect design creativity. The subjects listening to fast-tempo music developed more creative ideas and exhibited higher fluency and flexibility of ideas, while the subjects listening to slow-tempo music, the originality and elaboration of their ideas were better. Furthermore, the idea elaboration was enhanced when listening to slow-music and without-music situations. Reasons for the phenomenon, we speculate that fast music triggered moderate and high activation states in positive emotions moreover accelerated subjects’ thinking speed and drawing, which might be helpful for fluency and flexibility of design sketches. On the other hand, slow tempo music trigger lower activation states was helpful for careful design thinking and sketch drawing, which might help with the originality, elaboration, and feasibility of design sketches.
