With the rapid changes of technology, the travel information on public transit has digitalized and displayed in dynamic ways to transfer messages and information. Digitalized wayfinding and signage system alter the ways of information communication, with which has been providing every commuters and travelers new experiences in receiving information. The representation of information directs users’ decision making. The importance of the visual representation design for railway branch line is often neglected but it is indeed needed by commuters. This paper addresses the essential design guidelines for visual representation based on user needs through a case study on Shalun Line, a Taiwan Railway branch line. Results show that the visual representation requires (1) the framework and the hierarchy to be established to show the scenario; (2) the basic fundamental grid system with which to enhance the reading experiences; (3) careful selection of the type font, with which to allow every single characters or words to be clearly read; (4) the proper use of font size and its features to show the key points; (5) to be designed in a way for the ease of reading and memorizing, and keep the same image style all the way through the whole design; (6) more diverse representation style for the differentiation of information to avoid confusion; (7) good use of color scheme which can enhance users’ recognition and memorization; and (8) proper color application and its brightness for higher attention from users. In sum, an information design needs to be designed in a way for ease of use and understanding and requires an integrated information architecture with which to clearly show the information to users and to provide better visual representation service to them.
