Adolescents hardly express their feelings and experiences of bereavement when a parent dies, and some type of involvement or participation in bereavement support groups is beneficial to those bereaved. The purpose of this study was to provide a description of female adolescents’ bereavement experience after father’s death, and to implement and evaluate a bereavement support group to assist adolescents in working through the task of grieving. The exploratory study was a qualitative and descriptive design, and participant-observation was employed. Subjects (N=8) were recruited from a junior college in northern Taiwan. The convenience sample consisted of eight 18-year-old female adolescents who lost a parent, due to death, in the age between 13 and 17. Six 90-minute sessions were held over a six-week period. The results demonstrated that the bereavement support group effectively help adolescents let out their kept-inside feelings and facilitate the tasks of mourning that need completion. Five major themes were identified to describe adolescents’ bereaved experiences: (1) kept inside feelings, (2) feeling isolated and incomplete, (3) role transition in family, (4) facing the death and attending the funeral, and (5) expectation to the future. Father’s death impacts the self, peer relationship, and family role on female adolescents. It is suggested that counselors, educators, and health professionals work with youth to incorporate these findings in prevention and treatment programs to relieve the burden of grief in bereaved adolescents and to assist the youth to move forward with life.
