英文摘要

This paper discusses the increased emphasis on extensive reading in EFL classrooms, the texts often used (i.e., graded readers), and a problem Taiwanese low level university English learners have participating (i.e., slow reading speeds). It then surveys techniques used to increase reading speeds and suggests a repeated reading technique that can be used with graded readers in extensive reading environments, Anderson^ Rate Build Up Procedure. The paper explains that this procedure shows promise for use with low level Taiwanese post-secondary learners who engage graded readers for extensive reading but notes that there is still insufficient empirical evidence that employs this application with this population and these texts to support a claim of effectiveness. To investigate such a claim, it reports the results of a study conducted with 44 low level adult learners in a Taiwanese university setting. The results of the study show a mean 45 WPM mean increase. Limitations and suggestions for further research are included.
