In contemporary academia, Wang Xiang-Jin’s Er-Ru Pavilion Introduction to Plants, or simply the Introduction to Plants, has caught attention as a book with documentary value in ancient agronomy or biology. In traditional bibliography, it belongs to the category “special treatise,” which was set up for miscellaneous books that could not be classified into any other categories. This category also contributes to reflection and adjustment to bibliographic structures and academic classifications. The officials of the Si-Ku Hall deemed such books valuable for its collection and verification of natural history but also severely criticized the ornate language of the literary origins and stories in them. However, the content does not conflict with the language style. The language style serves as a showcase of natural history, interlinks origins and stories, and provides space for cultural memories. The “Meaning Reference” in the Introduction to Plants demonstrates that cultural memories should be regarded more than a static historical asset because they also nourish our daily life. The ri-yong ‘daily usage’ that Wang mentioned includes the two aspects of phenomenal experience and moral mentality. The literary origins and ornate language are used as the media that string the cultural memories together, and the whole Introduction to Plants is full of explicit and implied comparisons.
