Purpose: To investigate the effect of fluid ingestion protocol on blood sugar and ratings of perceived exertion in female soccer players during the training. Methods: 18 female soccer players (age: 20.6 ± 1.6 year-old, height: 162.6 ± 5.6 cm, weight: 56.71 ± 5.04 kg, years of playing soccer: 10.7 ± 2.5 years), were divided into two groups. One group drank water (W group) while other group drank sport drinks (CE group). For 90 minutes training under comfortable environment, test subjects were given liquid at designed time during training. The liquid supplement of W and CE were 1259.33 ± 95.42 ml and 1234.11 ± 116.35 ml. Blood sugar concentration and ratings of perceived exertion were measured before and after training. Results: The study indicated that the blood sugar level of W was 91.67 ± 9.07 mg/dl which is significantly lower than 129.78 ± 18.47 mg/dl of CE; and there were no significant changes between W and CE in the ratings of perceived exertion after the training, though the ratings of perceived exertion after training of W was 3.56 ± 1.33 significantly higher than before training at 1.11 ± 1.36. Conclusion: Thus, in summary, sport drinks are better at maintaining the blood sugar concentration during training, but only consuming water will result in an increase of rated perceived exertion after training.
