My City, the first novel of the renowned Hong Kong novelist Xixi (1938- ), is one of the masterpieces in contemporary Chinese fictions. Since the handover of the sovereignty after 1997 in Hong Kong, it has been discussed comprehensively as a work of local consciousness. However, the heterogeneity of the text also leads to innumerable possibilities of interpretation. This essay aims at analyzing the work from the perspective of ‘Outer Space,’ focusing on the scientific and fantastic elements and the sense of modernity embedded in its content. Science and technology are crucial elements in science fictions, playing a focal part in the reflection of modernity. The first part of this essay will point out that most of the relevant scientific and fantastic elements are experienced by the protagonist of My City, Ah Guo, showing that these elements are so important to express the theme of the novel as well as the metaphor of modernity. Then, from the aspect of “dystopia” and “eschatology,” the essay will explain how My City rewrites and even subverts these two concepts by using different techniques such as parody, dialogues and allusion. Through these rewriting and subversion, the novel brings out a key message of retrieving the hope of the future in the human world. In the Seventies of 20th century, such unique writing components make My City one of the most outstanding novels among Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Besides, My City not only addresses the common concern of local consciousness in Hong Kong but also proposes an alternative theme of integration and co-existence through rethinking the new situation of modernity. In the sense of local identity, My City also shows its different angle and “heterogeneity” in Hong Kong literature.
