In recent years, travel writing has become popular in Taiwan’s publishing market. In contrast to the outsider/foreigner perspective adopted by most previous travel accounts, the “Taiwan Literature Travel Series” published during 2002-2004 invited local/native writers to construct travel landscapes from within. However, what qualifies one as a “local” writer? What sense of place does this “local” identity imply and what kinds of landscape were hence constructed? Close examination of the texts reveals that high degree of mobility in modern society has made the “local” identity more subjective and diversified, and long periods of estrangement not only produced a sense of alienation on the “local” writers but turned the supposedly space-oriented travel accounts into time-biased nostalgia.
