The major purpose of this paper is to study adolescents’ self-injurious behaviors. It especially focuses on examining the meaning and function of such behaviors to the self-injurers. Qualitative data were gathered via personal interviews with seven adolescents who had injured themselves before. Analysis of these data suggests poor parent-child relationships and the high expectation of parents are most related to adolescents’ self-injurious behaviors. To these adolescents, self-injury is used as a means of directly expressing their needs, and releasing the tension they have experienced in their life. In other words, the behavior is functional to these adolescents. Implications for future intervention are as follows: to distinguish suicide from self-injury, and to help adolescents learn to use alternative behaviors to communicate their feelings, to develop other coping and problem-solving strategies, and to reduce family tension.
