In Taiwan, there are a large number of motorcycles, and on average every 1.7 persons have a motorcycle. There were numerous motorcycle accidents. Nearly 90% of all traffic accidents involved motorcycles. Motorcyclist safety education thus is an important issue. Considering the severity of young motorcyclist accidents, this study aims at developing a motorcycle riding game system on a smartphone platform; yielding right-of-way at intersections is chosen as the main learning theme. Various learning scenarios related with yielding right-of-way were designed on different game routes and a mechanism for evaluating learning performances was developed. The evaluations of learning performances included knowledge of motorcycle safety using questionnaires; in addition, the riding behaviors in the game were recorded for investigating the changes of learners’ riding behaviors. A total of 52 young subjects were recruited in the study. The analysis results of the pre-questionnaires and post-questionnaires of motorcycle safety knowledge and riding behaviors showed that the participants did not have sufficient motorcycle safety knowledge regardless of their gender or having a motorcyclist’s license. The participants’ knowledge about the yielding right-of-way related traffic signs, traffic marking, traffic signals, and behavioral rules was insufficient. Learning through the developed motorcycle riding game system significantly improved the participants’ motorcycle safety cognitive knowledge and considerably reduced their incorrect driving behaviors. The results suggest that applying motorcycle riding game to young motorcyclist for learning safe riding knowledge and proper riding behaviors is an educational approach that is worth of further consideration and development.
