Incorporating digital images from virtual worlds such as Second Life in art class can dramatically influence art curriculum development. The greatest benefit of using Second Life in contemporary art education is that art teachers can experience digital visual cultures in Second Life before teaching students how to critically analyze an object. In Second Life, people live in new bodies and use and design their own avatars to identify themselves. Besides Second Life’s sexual avatars, several online sites that feature sexuality content such as Reddit® and Scarleteen® also attract the young that may also influence young people's attitudes towards sex and sexuality. Given the trend that teenagers are curious about discussing sexual issues, if this information cannot be gained from a formal school education, the young may be misled by these sexual images in virtual worlds. In this article, the author discusses raunch culture from post-feminist perspectives, the dilemma in raunch culture, and women’s empowerment. The author advocates that incorporating feminist pedagogy in art classes is an effective approach to discuss gender and sexual issues. Three examples from virtual worlds are also presented as a potential topic in art class for a secondary school. Several suggestions are made at the end of the article.
