Rukai tribes scatter both east and west sides of the Central Mountain Range. The evolvements of their traditional cultures appear differently due to the influence of nearby ethnic groups and regional cultures. In 1960s, a group of Rukai people migrated east to Jinfeng Township from Wutai of the West, located in the territory of Paiwan, and gradually accommodated their language and culture to the mainstream. Rukai people in Jialan Village convert the symbolic meaning of lily into the nostalgia toward their origin, and pass down traditional culture through lily empower ritual, song and dance, slate house, and pottery art. In the way, they find their ethnic identity back. The exhibition and performance “The Story of Lily” took place in the museum and the Jialan village simultaneously. This essay focus on the observation of some half-hidden cultural features such as: How do Jialan Rukai people, who live among Paiwan, seek for the survival of their culture? What role does the lily take in their culture? When the exhibition took place in the community, and local identity overtopped ethnic identity, how did they accommodate themselves on the release of collective emotion?
