聖嚴法師在臺灣提出「心靈環保」新名詞，在思想深度與實踐廣度上，持續落實「提昇人的品質，建設人間淨土」的運動，至今已匯聚成一股淨化、療癒人文與自然病症的力量。本文直接標示出聖嚴法師的環境思想，首先解釋建立於心靈環保的環境哲學，可以說是一種環境存有論，它強調一種非二元對立的整體觀，回歸心靈淨化提昇自我，人在環境中肯認自己的位置與責任；在此基礎下，進一步與深層生態學思想做一對比。深層生態學者納斯以自我實現的概念架構出「生態智慧T」，他是從其生存的地理空間中孕育與建構出生態哲學，而聖嚴法師則植根於佛法在人世間的事實與潛態，從心靈環保中開展環境智慧；因此，我們說建立於心靈環保的環境哲學也可以揭示出聖嚴法師的環境智慧；再者，聖嚴法師的環境哲學思想與全球化地球公民素養之普遍化可以接契，本文要從目前國家幸福思潮，特別是不丹模式正在進行一種深層內在的反思，不丹國家幸福指數的實踐已成為全世界許多工業文明國家注目的焦點，它所以能夠匯聚與開發出驚人的力量，依開創者的說法，其中有很重要的根源是來自於佛法。聖嚴法師提出心靈環保的目地即是為臺灣社會帶來更多的光明，更大的願景、更安定的人心，同時在物質與精神方面成為美化世界，淨化世界的中心。於是，我們可以說心靈環保的環境哲學具有一種跨文化、普遍性的環境思想；另一方面它也是一種全球共通的語言，可以做為面對當前環境事實處境底下的個人自處與對應之道，它是臺灣可以輸出並貢獻給全球之重要的核心價值。

Religious groups have been concerned about environmental issues for a long time. The Venerable Master Shengyen puts forward a new term called “Spiritual Environmentalism,” which in turn leads to the movement “Uplift the Character of Humanity and Build a Pure Land on Earth.” Since its conception, this movement has become a purifying force that not only enhances human minds but also protects the environment. This article aims to discuss why Master Shengyen’s environmental philosophy can be an environmental ontology. The Venerable Master Shengyen’s environmental ontology emphasizes that human nature comprises both wisdom and compassion which requires continual practice on the part of practitioners. Based on this, people are inclined to care for and protect ‘the others,’ including other humans, nonhuman creatures and our environment. This paper will also compare the concept of ‘self’ in deep ecology and Master Shengyen’s environmental philosophy. Naess chooses the term “Self-realization” to construct “Ecosophy T,” whereas Master Shengyen applies Buddha Nature to develop environmental wisdom. Finally, by way of analyzing the case of Bhutan GNH, this paper will demonstrate why Master Shengyen’s environmental philosophy is a valuable theory. Indeed, The Venerable Master Shengyen believes that the goal of spiritual environmentalism can lead to a significant contribution to Taiwan society.
