This essay aims to develop a ritual theory of discourse and to bring into existence a new perspective for the study of cultural movement. The theory is based on two postulates. First, a discourse is more than a process consisting of various intertextual activities. Second, a discourse is in essence a “rite of recognition.” For those who take part in it,a discourse is more than a series of rational debates “for truth” or “about truth.” Rather, it is a battleground for cultural legitimacy and authority. A study of the components that constitutes a discourse from which a cultural movement is composed provides, I suggest, a more substantial account of the organization and the process of a cultural movement, and, likewise, the question of how ideas and ideals are discursively constructed in and through a cultural movement.
