爲了滿足心理上的安全感，澎湖各聚落單元的居民透過宗敎器物及祭儀共同建構其 領域，以排除鬼及煞之迫害。在本文中，作者首先說明此種領域建構之原則爲：（一)以宮 廟及主公爲核心；㈡以營頭爲領域界線的基準點；㈢以安營路徑爲邊緣；㈣以公設附屬 廟及辟邪物爲補強物。除此之外，居民定期或不定期性地舉辦各種祭儀，或是依據主公 之指示增建各種民間信仰設施，以淨化其領域或強化其領域結構。 在文章的最後，作者進一步指出，此種領域之範圍會因聚落單元之分裂、營頭位置 及鎭符路線之變遷而改變。

The inhabitants of the units of human settlement on the Pescadore Islands construct their territory by means of religious talismans and rites. Their purpose is to insure the psychological need for safety by guarding against persecution by ghosts (鬼）and sha (煞，powerful evil forces’). Four strategies are adopted in the construction of territory. Firstly，villagers have at least one village temple (宮廟）which houses one or several main gods; the temple functions as the center of the village. Secondly, they erect certain symbols of divine troops (營頭）to mark the village’s borders. Thirdly， they mark out the village border by following a route around the village when installing the symbols of the divine troops (安營).Fourthly，they build supplemental temples and public talismans to reinforce village territory. In addition, villagers also strengthen village territory by holding periodic and occasional rites or by constructing additional religious objects as directed by the village gods. Village religious territory is not, however, unchanging. Alterations occur when the location of symbols of divine troops and the routes of yearly renewing the symbols of divine troops (鎭符）change.
