Frequent contact between China and Japan occurred during Japan's Edo period, through which large quantities of Chinese books were introduced to Japan, including erotic novels from the Ming and Qing dynasties. On account of their content, erotic novels were banned and destroyed in China, and a number of these were no longer seen in their original editions. Fortunately, however, some of them were well preserved in their Japanese editions, Ruyi jun zhuan 如意君傳 being one of them. During the Edo period, besides the original edition from China and a Japanese edition, Ruyi jun zhuan also existed in a popular edition, Tongsu ruyi jun zhuan 通俗如意君傳, a critical edition, Ruyi jun zhuan kaozheng 如意君傳考證, and other different editions, catering to a wide variety of audiences. This article investigates three selected editions of the erotic novel Ruyi jun zhuan published and in circulation in the period, examining the reception, adaptation, and reading of Ruyi jun zhuan after its introduction to Japan. This serves as an example of the reception and dissemination of erotic novels introduced from China to Japan in the Edo period.
