Starting in 2015, hoverboards become widely popular for personal shortdistance transportation on flat surfaces. However, hoverboards currently available on market nowadays lacks security features, it is exposed to the risk of being stolen. In this paper, the authors propose a Bluetooth based security enhancement system on a hoverboard. To start the hoverboard, the owner is required to pair the hoverboard and the smartphone-based controller through a Bluetooth connection. Besides, the proposed security system ensures that the hoverboard is within a visible distance from the smartphone. Once the distance exceeds the Bluetooth coverage range, the connection will be terminated and the hoverboard will turn off itself. Real time results show that the proposed system succeeds in improving hoverboard security.
