The trend of late marriage, late in raising children, busy life style, and stress all cause the rising annual ratio of infertile couples in Taiwan. For those couples with infertility, the burdens of stress for infertility treatment and economic pressure must be extremely great. Therefore the purpose of this review is to search various ways for infertility treatment and enhancing the successful rate through the survey of Western and Chinese Medicine literature. Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse according to the WHO. For those women over 35, if unsuccessful to conceive within 6 months may be regarded as having infertility because of the age-related lower fertility rate. In this review, the current understanding for the causes of infertility is introduced first. Next, the up to date diagnosis and therapy on infertility are reviewed from the literature and the concept and treatment from Chinese Medicine are also compared. A total understanding of etiology and treatment strategy for infertility from the East and West medicine would provide a better way for treating infertility.
