In Taiwan, the roles nurse practitioners (NP) play include patients5 direct-carers, the coordinator of medical care, the educators of health-related knowledge, and the monitors of care quality. The complexity of the roles they play and the demand resulted have led to workplace fatigue, which further influences their job satisfaction. This study aims at investigating the relationship among nurse practitioners5 basic attributes, working stress, occupational burnout and job satisfaction and further locating the important predictors to improve their job satisfaction. We selected a total of 144 NPs from one medical center and two regional teaching hospitals in southern Taiwan as our subjects. The research instruments included background information sheets, the Likert-scale questionnaires for the evaluation of stress, occupational burnout and job satisfaction. The result revealed a significant difference between working units and job satisfaction. Seniority and weekly working hours negatively correlated with job satisfaction. Working stress and occupational burnout were negatively correlated with job satisfaction. Occupational burnout and working stress were the important predictors of NP5s job satisfaction. It is expected that the results of this study provide the references for the relevant medical units to amend NP administrative management, work planning and other related regulations.
