Implicit in the commentarial logic of the Siku quanshu zongmu’s (四庫 全書總目General Catalog of the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries) critique of historical scholarship, are the mainstream scholarly ideas of the time. An analysis of this logic with respect to works on the Yijing (易經 Book of Changes) will therefore help us understand the mainstream concepts found in Qing dynasty Yijing studies. The Siku quanshu zongmu categorizes Yijing studies into“two sects and six schools,” namely the Image-Numerology Sect 象數派, which includes the simple Image-Numerology School 象數宗, the Divination School 禨祥宗, and the Object-Creating School 造化宗; and the Meaning-Pattern Sect 義理派, consisting of the Lao-Zhuang School 老莊 宗, the Neo-Confucian School 儒理宗, and the Historical Event School 史 事宗. Despite giving consideration to all of the two sects and six schools, and arguing that xiang (象 image), shu (數 number), and li (理 meaning, pattern) are mutually complementary concepts, the Siku quanshu zongmu however displays a logical tendency towards orthodoxythat implies an emphasis on xiang and li. Consequently, it classifies the simple Image-Numerology School, which attaches most importance to xiang, and the Neo-Confucian and Historical Event schools, which are closer to the world of human affairs, as the orthodox in Yijing studies. Conversely, the Divination and Object-Creating schools that emphasize shu, and the Lao-Zhuang and Mind-Philosophy 心學 schools, which emphasize li and are less concerned with human affairs, are excluded from the orthodox. This is because the Siku quanshu zongmu views the former as drawing the Yijing into divination, and the latter as pushing it towards heterodoxy. The above reflects how Qing dynasty Confucians adhered to Confucian views on Yijing studies when undertaking the full and thorough bibliographic critique of its historical schools and works included in the Siku quanshu zongmu.
