This article focuses on Wang Shizhen and various Chinese envoys during the early Qing period with writings that reflect the worldview of early Qing scholars, particularly the ‘poetics’ of Wang Shizhen and its significance to modern East Asia. The poetry of Wang Shizhen and other Chinese scholars eulogize the African lion which the Portuguese offered up as tribute to the Emperor K'ang-his. Not only do these writings verify the interest of Chinese scholars in foreign things, they also show their endeavors to integrate foreign things into the Chinese system of knowledge. Second, the works of Wang Shizhen, his poetry and articles touch upon his friendship with envoys who visited Annam, Joseon and the Ryukyus. Wang Shizhen encouraged envoys to expound on foreign things and knowledge. Thus the envoy Zhoucan who visited Annam wrote a collection of Bamboo poems Shi Jiao Yin. Envoy Wang Ji, who was Wang Shizhen’s disciple, prepared Zhong Shan Yan Ge Zhi and Shi Liu Qiu Za Lu on his return from the Ryukyus. And a collection of folk ways was compiled in Chao Xian Cai Feng Lu after envoy SunZhi Mi visited Joseon. All the above were described in Chi Bei Ou Tan written by Wang Shizhen. There are two key areas that highlight the significance of the poetics of Wang Shizhen to modern East Asia: First, are the observations of Wang Shizhen and other Chinese scholars on foreign phenomena based upon the writings of their envoys and this knowledge inspired by Wang Shizhen who promoted literary interaction with modern East Asian. Second, owing to Wang’s initiative, Bamboo poetry became a popular way to profile foreign customs and institutions.
