英文摘要

Liao Hung Gee began a voyage from Kaoshiung Harbor in December 2001 that would take him 14,000 kilometers to a squid fishing farm in Argentina. His epic trip that lasted until February 2002 let him witness the techniques of distant sea fishing and experience unique aspects of life. His notes are compiles in this book, “Drifting Island” that traces a journey of adventure, solidtude and discovery. He joined fierce combat at sea and lived the life of a lonely and exhausted crew member. Likely his most important experience was the solitary life that comes with sailing for long durations. Through the tedium the author gained insight on how his heart was tied to both land and sea. This paper analyzes the background and substance of the book. It also explores Liao’s numerous dreams and subconscious experiences to further understand the writer’s lost and salvation at sea. The book is a solemn ritual that explores the soul of a pilgrim.
