There were different issues of islands governing in the early Ming Dynasty: 1. To subjugate political rivals on the sea and to defeat remnant Mongolian militaries; 2. To surrender rebels and appease refugees on the coastal islands; 3. To suppress and defend against Japanese pirates; 4. Diplomatic relations with neighboring countries. The developmental changes of island issues in the Middle Ming were: 1.To suppress Chinese rebels and defend against invasions of Japanese and Western pirates, 2. To set up the military bases and carry out defense measures along coastline, 3. Tributary relations and Kan-He( 勘合) trade, 4. Migrates and refugees governance, 5.Sea transportation and maritime trade. This article explores the historical narratives with the key terms such as “island(島)” and “islet(嶼)”, etc. by the approach of “Digital Humanities” focusing on the Veritable Records of the Ming (明實錄) and further outlines the island issues at central government level in the Wanli(萬曆) reign of late Ming Dynasty. It focuses on the Japanese pirates’ invasions of Joseon and the subsequent issues of anti-pirates defense policies, and also includes certain domestically and foreign inter-relative civil administrative affairs such as sea shipping, trades, fugitives, island farms and Chinese pirates. And spatially, it examines the islands near the Bohai Sea and the Sino- Joseon border regions, islands in the East China Sea and Taiwan Strait as well as Ryukyu, Taiwan and Penghu etc., to illustrate the historical and spatial characteristics of island issues in the Wanli reign of the late Ming dynasty.
