基隆在日治時期因作為日本進入臺灣的「玄關」，日方對基隆有計畫實施各種 建設，促使港口興建、商業發展、人口增加，造成基隆的都市化。目前有關基隆 的研究，多以港口和城市建設為探討主題，且已有豐富的成果，但對都市的社會 中菁英扮演的角色，特別是日籍菁英的角色，尚未有學者討論到。菁英是社會中 堅，對政治、經濟和社會各層面都有很大的影響力。本論文即以昭和18 年版《臺 灣人士鑑》收錄基隆日籍菁英為中心，探討日治時期基隆的日本人、日籍菁英的 生活和對基隆的意象並作進一步分析，期望對日籍菁英在基隆的生活和影響力， 有進一步的瞭解。

Although Japan gained many resources from Taiwan during colonial rule, it also implemented many important policies to expand land use and strengthen sovereignty. Keelung, as the prime gateway for Japan, was rebuilt into a modern port city during in the 1895-1945 period of colonial rule. The more than 25,000 Japanese settlers who moved to Keelung greatly influenced city development. During the period an investigation by Taiwan Ren Shih Chian reported that there were 82 elite Japanese residents in Keelung, The fresh settlers, as compatriots of Taiwan’s new rulers, had opinions that mattered. This study probes endeavors to develop Keelung, the lifestyles of the Japanese and the interaction of the Japanese with the Taiwanese, and how the Japanese in Keelung influenced and promoted the area’s development and urbanization.
