本文旨在建構中國古典園林理論史。此為第一部分，包括先秦兩漢時期的園林論述。整體架構援引現代園林理論系統，分為園林功能論、園林興造論與園林鑑賞論。園林功能論的發展：從神話中的黃帝懸圃，一直到宋、明成熟且高度藝術化的文人園林之間，園林的本質、園林的功能、園林對生命意義的浸澤等相關的立論，是如何依循歷史時間而逐漸豐富、深化，與文人之間相互融攝增進，而成就了文化史上重要的文人場域與藝術支脈，其基本觀念與理論得以條暢地被展現。園林興造論的發展：落實為實際的造園歷史，是如何從廣大的山水園、帝王苑囿的大山大水，發展為江南文人園林的典型化、象徵化手法。其間是如何一點一點地在縮小面積，改變手法，而逐漸凝聚成共通的造園法則與經營知識。園林五大要素的設計要領，各自如何發展而成為宋明普遍的共識，而積澱成為穩定的造園理論，其間的脈絡得以被貫通、被呈現。園林鑑賞論的發展：透過園林文獻的解讀，從實際居遊園林的鑑賞經驗中，如何漸次地建立園林美學，而確立越加藝術化、文人化的發展路向，從而提供遊人遊園時的審美法則，領受其意境情味。
