Emojis have become increasingly popular in social media for their effective and succinct way of communicating the user’s feelings. Today's digital natives use social media platforms and communication devices to express their ideas and emotions with each other, and emojis have become one of the indispensable tools for these interactions. Having a sense of the functionality and aesthetics of emojis helps art teachers gain insights into the roles of emojis in visual culture. In this article, we explore emojis as modes of artistic expression and means of communication by looking at the functionality and aesthetics of emojis. We also propose making personalized emojis that cater to diverse cultural of a society. Then we describe an art course for middle schoolers where students learn and create personalized emojis as modes of artistic expression and communicative means. This paper in the end also argues that the art education allows students to develop awareness of cultural diversity in society as well as institutional critique of the mainstay of culture.
