英文摘要

Art is taught in schools as a subject, yet it is perceived by many as a subject for a few individuals who were born with the talent to do it, especially because of its practical nature; while others believe it can be learnt. These thoughts might be responsible for the visibly low population of Visual art students in senior secondary schools where art is optional as its choice by a student is dependent on a factor which sets his enthusiasm in motion: this is Interest. The questions of how students develop art interest, its influence on the students’ choice of art as one of their school subjects and the effects of interest or the lack of it on the population of Visual art students in senior secondary schools form the main thrust of this paper. It seeks to cross-examine the child’s development of art interest from the perspectives of nature and nurture, attempting to justify the place of natural art endowment and upbringing with art learning in the making of Visual art students. The study discovers that both nature and nurture influence art interest in the child and that interest is the activator of students’ choice of visual arts in the senior secondary school. Based on the findings, recommendations are made on harnessing the knowledge of the child’s natural art development (nature) and his/her possibility of learning art (nurture) to encourage the students in offering art, boost their art interest and consequently enhance visual art student’s population in Senior Secondary Schools and in higher education.
