Background and purposes: People with Parkinson’s disease (PD) often experienced movement impairment such as postural instability, balance impairment, and gait dysfunction. These impairments would cause difficulty in managing functional task in activities of daily living and would increase risk of falling. Exergame training involves giving out tasks in virtual environment to enhance physical and cognitive layers of human bodies. During performing tasks in virtual environment, augmented visual, auditory, and sensory feedback are provided to participants so that they can measure and set new goal to improve performance. The purpose of this study is to systematically review the evidence of exergame in randomized control trial and used a meta-analytical approach to assess the effects on balance in people with PD. Methods: A systematic search of the randomized controlled trial studies to the end of 31st March 2018 was conducted. Some related databases were searched. The quality of eligible studies was evaluated using PEDro Scale and Oxford classification. Meta-analysis was conducted using Review Manager Version 5.3 software (The Cochrane Collaboration, Copenhagen, Denmark). Results: Eventually, 6 studies were included in meta-analysis and systematic review. The results of meta-analysis showed that exergame significantly improved Berg Balance Scale in people with PD (mean difference [MD] = 1.94, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.87 ~ 3.00, p = 0.0004). According to systematic review, exergame also decreased fall risk and improved the quality of life. Conclusions: Exergame may help to improve balance performance in people with PD.
