Background and Purpose: Functional ankle instability is a common sequela after an ankle sprain. Taping is usually used to protect the joints and prevent re-injury. However, taping may limit the joint movement which leads to disadvantage functional performance. In addition, the subjective feelings of patients after taping may also affect their performance. Th e aim of this study was to investigate the effects of fibular tape and traditional tape on functional performance, self-efficacy and perceived stability, confidence and reassurance during functional tasks in participants with functional ankle instability. Methods: This was a randomized controlled trial. The participants with functional ankle instability were recruited and randomly allocated to fibular tape or traditional tape groups. Both groups were received one-time taping intervention. Outcome measures included functional performance, self-efficacy and perceived stability, confidence and reassurance during functional tasks. Results: The result showed that the two types of taping improved functional performance (eg., figure-8 hopping, lateral hopping, and star excursion balance-posterior medial side), self-efficacy and perceived stability, confidence and reassurance during functional tasks. There were significant improvements in star excursion balance such as anterior medial and medial sides after the fibular tape. Conclusions: Both fibular and traditional tapes helped improved functional performance, self-efficacy and perceived stability, confidence and reassurance during functional tasks.
