The construction of Hong Kong literature was not necessarily through focusing on the development of local literature or dialogues with China. The Hong Kong literature was also shaped by forming various lines of thought, such as connections with Taiwan and Southeast Asia. By focusing on Ba- Fang Literary Journal and Hong Kong Literature, this study reveals that 1980s Hong Kong was an active hub of cultural China, demonstrated the importance of situatedness, and witnessed how border crossings contributed to the development of Hong Kong literature as well as its interaction with literature from other cultures. At the time, although Hong Kong literature sought its roots in Chinese culture when connecting with Chinese-language literature in other regions, many directions of relevant discourse transformed the “products” of this root-seeking into place-based “producers.”
