This paper begins with a short account of how the U.S. took advantage of the Cold War to deploy its policy of containment in an attempt to counter communism in Asia. The fact also made possible the visible American presence in the politics of the R.O.C. and the quotidian life of the people of Taiwan during the Cold War period. The Cold War was in fact fought mainly in the realms of politics and ideology. It was, therefore, through economic and cultural productions that American values and life styles were exported to Taiwan as a way to safeguard the national interests of the U.S. This paper will look at the writings of Huang Chunming and Wang Zhenhe, two major Taiwanese writers, to investigate how they observe and contemplate the American influences upon the mindset and psychology of the people of Taiwan. It points out that both Huang and Wang explicitly make use of satire as a form to delineate farcically the spiritual conditions and behavior of the people under the sway of the Cold War culture. Their writings can thus be seen as a critique of American cultural hegemony during the Cold War period.
