Based on the training course of “Carpentry Design and Manufacture of Outdoor Picnic Table”, a part of the Indigenous Co-Prosperity Program offered by the Experimental Forest of National Taiwan University, this study investigated the learning effectiveness of the students from detailed structural design of each component to final product completion. The course not only introdueced students the current situation of thinned wood utilizations in Taiwan, but also offered practical trainingin the design processes, including choosing, processing, sawing, assembling and painting the thinned wood, and turning it into picnic tables of six different designs. We found that although the aboriginal students had basic carpentry knowledge and training background, they still had difficulty in completing practical manufacture of their own designed works. It is not because of lacking creativity or poor execution ability, but insufficient practical experience and short of exposure to manufacture process. As a result, the carpentry training course under the Indigenous Co-Prosperity Program offered advantages of pratical practice sessions, of which students not only learn about processing of thinned wood and its characteristics, but also acquire skills and experience in discussing and communicating with field professionals. Our study showed thatwith courses offering training and actual practice, itprovides aboriginal students opportunities to improve their design and practical capability for their future careers. Therefore, we believe the Indigenous Co-Prosperity Program will help achieve the spirit of mutual prosperity, assistance, and cooperation between the Experimental Forest of National Taiwan University and the indigenous people.
