From the perspective of stylistics, this paper explores the artistic expression of Wang Anshi’s 王安石 (1021-1086) regulated verse, which focuses on the different forms of the “three poetic styles” 宋初三體 in the Song dynasty. Wang not only selectively absorbed some of the characteristics of the “three poetic styles,” but also further expressed his own forms of development through the content, theme, artistic style, etc., of poetry. Broadly speaking, Wang’s five-character regulated verse 五言律詩 inherited the “later Tang style” 晚唐體, but simultaneously avoided its various faults concerning content and style. His seven-character regulated verse 七言律詩 both fused the “bai style” 白體 with the “later Tang style” and incorporated “singing of my feelings” 詠懷 tradition as well as an allegorical or a satirical spirit. Therefore, Wang Anshi, as a link between the past and future, uniquely contributed towards the development of Song poetry 宋詩.
