英文摘要

More and more universities have incorporated internship programs into their curriculum to help students get ready for the future job market. The purpose of this study was to investigate students’ self-perceived employability in an English Department in Taiwan. Research questions of the study include: 1) Are there significant differences in students’ self-perceived employability among students in different grade levels? 2) Is there a significant difference in employability between students who have participated in the internship programs and those who haven’t? A survey questionnaire was distributed to a total of 265 Taiwanese college students enrolled in an English Department in Northern Taiwan. The questionnaire included four subcategories: dedication & cooperation, development potential, professional knowledge, and international competence. Results showed significant differences among different grade levels in regard to students’ self-perceived employability, especially in cooperation and dedication and professional knowledge. Significant difference was also found in employability between students who participated in internship programs and those who didn’t. The study suggested that the internship program and prerequisite courses provided in the department helped students to develop their employability and prepare them for future job market. As internship involves the supervision of employers, planning and guidance of teachers and the dedication from students/interns, it is hoped that the study can provide insights and implications for all three parties.
