More and more people are making educational videos and posting them to public platforms. One of the biggest categories is language-learning videos, and among them English-aided Chinese-teaching videos are getting attention as well. In order to help students keep up with the educational trend in the field of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL), this study is about how a language-teaching course is designed to enhance learners’ English presentation skills. By regularly watching, evaluating, and imitating the English-aided language-learning videos on YouTube, 39 participants, who enrolled in the course “English for the Purpose of TCSL” at a private university in Fall 2018 semester in Taiwan, made Chinese-teaching videos which shed light on the TCSL knowledge they learned from the course.
Along with peer assessment, the participants were required to present self-made Chinese-teaching videos during the midterm- and final-exam weeks, and the researcher executed questionnaires and interviews accordingly. The results from the questionnaires showed that through applying an approach of “learning by doing” and peer assessment, participants gained a better sense of their potency effectiveness and deficiencies in making educational videos. Moreover, the first video production in the midterm week and the second video production in the final-exam week also encouraged them to develop further English presentation skills, skills of filming and editing, and knowledge regarding Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. In sum, this course served as an example of how a course design can better prepare students in an internationalized teaching world.
