The academic achievements of Japanese sinologist Shionoya On (1878-1962) were recognized by the academic circles, and his excavation and research on Chinese dramas and novels could be said to have laid the foundation for the modern study of Chinese popular literature. The Lectures on Introduction to Chinese Literature, published in 1919, was an important milestone. Shionoya had a significant impact on the Chinese academic community in the 1920s as in December 1936 he was invited by Taihoku Imperial University (today's National Taiwan University) to come to Taiwan for a short-term lecture. His lecture’s outline and travel trail selected from his “Taiwan Travelogue” had been published in sequential installments in Shibun Magazine, which helps the author to carry out a fact-finding study of Shionoya’s lecture in Taiwan. This article intends to further explain that Shionoya’s Taipei lecture was an important link at Japan and abroad in his later years, and through the interaction with Chinese scholars and his experience of lectures at Japan and abroad, he had constructed his literary history discourse. Shionoya revised and published An Introduction to Chinese Literature in 1946-1947. In 1949, the book’s second half was retitled A Study of Chinese Novels and independently published. The book refers to Zheng Zhenduo's research, adds the popular literature founded in Dunhuang, and includes Shionoya’s new-found fictions such as Quanxiang Pinghua, Sanyan, Liangqi and The Spectacles in Ancient and Modern Times. By doing so, the history of Chinese novels becomes more complete. By comparison, the new edition of the chapter arrangement of An Introduction to Chinese Literature is identical with the main outline and content of Shionoya’s Taipei lecture, which helps us learn more about his lecture and makes it meaningful under the context of overseas lecture and academic publication.
