This research used the method of participatory observational case study. Students from Taiwan Taichung Chenggong Junior High School used the virtual world of Virtual Commons for Education and Research (VCER) at University of British Columbia in their class. The main research question for this paper is “How do junior high school students visually communicate in a virtual environment?” The art teacher taught a lesson called “School Reconstruction”, and the researcher observed the students’ learning. The research findings include five threads found in this project, including teamwork, motivation, freedom, participation, and visual learning. Furthermore, the students’ visual communication process is a non-stop circulating process between seeing, discussing, negotiating, experimenting, and back to seeing. It is evident that using virtual technology in a junior high school art classroom helps students to enhance their visual communication ability as using virtual technology is not only about seeing and making but also about discussing, negotiating, and experimenting.
